Sergio Pettis vs. Jussier Formiga Expected at UFC 229 in October
A potential No. 1 contender’s bout at flyweight is in the works for UFC 229 as Sergio Pettis is expected to meet Jussier Formiga on Oct. 6 in Las Vegas.
Sources close to the matchup confirmed the news on Wednesday following an initial report from ESPN. UFC officials have not confirmed the fight or made the matchup official yet.
For Pettis the matchup at UFC 229 will almost certainly put him one step away from earning his first shot at gold inside the Octagon.
The veteran flyweight contender most recently picked up the biggest win of his career when he edged out former two time title challenger Joseph Benavidez at UFC 225.
As for Formiga, the Brazilian submission specialist is coming off back-to-back finishes to cement his spot as one of the best flyweights in the world.
Formiga has been asking for a matchup that would give him the opportunity get a shot at the flyweight title and there may be no better opponent than Pettis to give him that chance.
Assuming the fight between Pettis and Formiga is finalized, it would join the UFC 229 lineup in Las Vegas with a main event for the upcoming pay-per-view still to be determined.
