Magomed Magomedkerimov Secures Second $1 Million Title at 2023 PFL Championship

Magomedkerimov conquers the welterweight championship in a stunning victory over Sadibou Sy.

At the 2023 PFL Championship in Washington, D.C., Magomed Magomedkerimov (33-6) triumphed over Sadibou Sy (16-6-2) to claim his second $1 million welterweight title. The No. 1 seed Magomedkerimov, who was the 2018 season winner, continued his dominant run in the 170-pound season championship at The Anthem, showcasing a mix of skill and strategy.

Magomedkerimov’s journey to the final was marked by impressive wins, including a knockout of Ben Egli and a submission over David Zawada. In the semifinals, he displayed his prowess with a unanimous decision against Solomon Renfro. Sy, having lost to Magomedkerimov in 2021, had since remained undefeated, including a $1 million season win in 2022.

The championship fight saw Magomedkerimov and Sy exchange solid shots in the first round, with Sy showcasing his kicking and kneeing abilities. However, Magomedkerimov’s relentless approach, especially in grappling and clinch work, eventually led to a stunning guillotine choke submission in the third round, with Sy tapping out at the 1:17 mark. This victory mirrors Magomedkerimov’s 2018 season win, also secured with the same choke.

Post-victory, Magomedkerimov faced off with Bellator welterweight champion Jason Jackson, setting the stage for a champion vs. champion showdown. Both fighters expressed mutual respect, with Jackson acknowledging Magomedkerimov’s performance and looking forward to their February clash.

Magomedkerimov’s victory not only cements his status as a two-time PFL champion but also sets up an eagerly anticipated bout against Bellator champion Jason Jackson, promising another thrilling chapter in his illustrious career.
