Mirko Cro Cop on Rematch with Fedor Emelianenko: ‘I Don’t Think That Fight Will Ever Happen’
Mirko Cro Cop has plenty on his mind when it comes to his fight career but he’s no longer thinking about a potential rematch against Fedor Emelianenko.
Back in 2005, Cro Cop met Emelianenko in one of the most anticipated fights in mixed martial arts history. What resulted was one of the greatest fights in the history of the sport and even now a decade later it’s tough to forget about that epic showdown between two heavyweight juggernauts.
While it’s hard to argue that both fighters are no longer in their primes, the interest in a potential matchup between Cro Cop and Emelianenko still exists, especially considering they are both fighting under the Bellator banner right now.
Emelianenko is part of the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix while Cro Cop is preparing for a rematch against Roy Nelson with the winner then serving as an alternate for that tournament should anybody get injured or be unable to compete.
Despite their close proximity to each other as part of the same promotion, Cro Cop says he not only doesn’t really care about that fight anymore but he doesn’t think it would happen anyways.
“People are asking me all the time about that but I don’t think about Fedor right now and I don’t think that the fight will happen,” Cro Cop said during the Bellator 200 media conference call on Thursday. “I don’t know. I don’t have some special desire to fight him anymore like I had before.
“Never say never, but I don’t think that fight will ever happen.”
That will probably be a heartbreaking answer to many hardcore mixed martial arts enthusiasts who were holding out hope for a long awaited rematch now that both are competing in Bellator.
From the sound of things, Cro Cop isn’t that interested in fight much less spending much of his time pursuing it.
Of course there’s still a chance the fight could happen depending on how this Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix plays out and whether or not Cro Cop decides to stick around the U.S. based promotion after his bout against Nelson next weekend.
