Watch Demetrious Johnson’s Sportsmanship After BJJ Win
Black Belt Debut in Las Vegas
Demetrious Johnson, the former UFC flyweight champion and current ONE Championship star, recently competed at the 2024 IBJJF World Masters Jiu Jitsu Championship in Las Vegas as a black belt. Johnson, who was promoted to black belt just three months before the tournament, started strong by winning his first three matches. In the quarterfinals, he faced Tomoya Yanagisawa and was submitted by a gi choke, which ended his run in the competition. Yanagisawa advanced to the semifinals but lost to Osvaldo ‘Queixinho’ Moizinho, who eventually won the division.
Johnson’s Classy Gesture Towards His Opponent
In his third match, Johnson defeated Takuto Kako on points. After the match, Johnson consoled his downcast opponent, displaying exceptional sportsmanship.
“It’s still good,” Johnson said. “There’s next year. This is for fun. Your life’s not going to change. You’re going to go home, keep on training, have a beautiful wife, kids, go back to work. This is for fun. There’s more to life than winning, I promise.”
His words reflect his own experience with the highs and lows of competitive sports and his understanding that there’s more to life than victories alone.
