Usman Nurmagomedov looks to Khabib: “He’s going to put the belt around my waist”
Preparation and Support from Khabib
Usman Nurmagomedov is gearing up for his title defense against Alexandr Shabliy at Bellator Champions Series: San Diego. Training at the renowned American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California, Nurmagomedov has been surrounded by top-notch support, including his cousin Khabib Nurmagomedov and coach Javier Mendez.
“I love this place and the people around me,” Usman said, highlighting the significance of having Khabib back in his corner after several fights away. “I hope Khabib is going to put the belt on me,” Usman added, emphasizing the emotional connection between the two cousins.
Controversy and Road to Redemption
Usman’s journey back to the cage hasn’t been without setbacks. He faced a suspension after testing positive for a banned substance following his victory over Brent Primus at Bellator 300. Usman maintained that he unknowingly consumed the substance through prescription medication and has consistently denied any intentional doping. His suspension and fine have been tough, but he is determined to move forward and prove his worth as Bellator’s lightweight champion.

Facing Shabliy and Future Uncertainty
Shabliy (24-3) is a formidable opponent, riding a five-fight winning streak in Bellator, including a notable victory over former champion Patricky Pitbull. Originally, this fight was expected to be the final of the Bellator lightweight Grand Prix before Bellator’s acquisition by PFL shifted the landscape. For Nurmagomedov, maintaining his undefeated record of 18-0 is the priority. “I think I’m going to maul this guy all five rounds,” he stated confidently.
