Kamaru Usman on UFC 304: “Wrestling Alone Won’t Cut It”
Kamaru Usman recently shared his thoughts on the upcoming welterweight title fight between Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad at UFC 304. Edwards, the current champion, is set to defend his title in a highly anticipated rematch against Muhammad on July 27 in Manchester, England.
Usman’s Analysis of the Fight
Having faced Edwards twice before, Usman brings a unique perspective. On his popular podcast, “Pound 4 Pound,” he discussed the dynamics of the fight and why he believes Edwards has the upper hand.
“I’ve been in the cage with Leon twice, and he’s a very well-rounded fighter,” Usman explained. “Belal has improved a lot, especially in his ability to mix up his striking and wrestling, but I don’t think it will be enough against someone like Leon.”
Usman emphasized the evolution of MMA, noting that pure wrestling skills are no longer sufficient at the highest levels of the sport.
The Evolution of MMA
“The sport has changed so much,” Usman said. “Fighters are better at using the cage to get back on their feet. It’s not just about taking someone down; you have to control them, and that’s where I think Belal might struggle against Leon. Leon’s takedown defense and ability to get back up have improved significantly.”
Usman also praised Muhammad’s ability to manage his pace and adapt during fights, referencing his performance against Gilbert Burns as a prime example.
“Belal showed in his fight with Burns that he can control the tempo and switch stances effectively. That’s a great skill to have, but Leon’s confidence as a champion and his experience in high-stakes fights give him an edge.”

Despite his prediction, Usman acknowledged the excitement surrounding the bout.
