Woodley held the welterweight title between 2016-2019. During his reign he defended his title against the likes of Demian Maia, Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson and Darren Till. While on top, Woodley looked great, that is before losing his title to current champion Kamaru Usman. Woodley was completely shut down, mounted no successful offence and lost via a crystal clear unanimous decision. He was then once again completely shut down in his latest outing, where Gilbert Burns completely dominated the champion for five full rounds.
Covington has of the past few years been one of the biggest antagonists in the UFC. After dispatching Dong Hyun Kim amongst others, he won the interim welterweight title in 2018 following decision win over Rafael dos Anjos. He would, however, later be stripped of his title after that he was unable to face then champion Woodley. He then defeated Robbie Lawler, earning a title shot against the above mentioned Usman, losing via fifth round TKO.
