Tyron Woodley on GFL: “FIGHTING IN SUPERMATCHES”
Woodley Joins the GFL Roster
Tyron Woodley has confirmed his place in Global Fight League (GFL), a new MMA organization set to launch early next year. In an interview with Ariel Helwani, GFL founder Darren Owen revealed key details about the organization’s format and fighter lineup. The league promises to deliver a fresh take on MMA, prioritizing fighter compensation and branding opportunities.
One major revelation was the signing of 300 fighters, including former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. Known for his explosive style and outspoken personality, Woodley expressed his excitement about joining the league and what it represents.
Fighter Compensation Like Boxing
In a separate interview with Helwani, Woodley shared his thoughts on GFL’s innovative approach. He emphasized the importance of fair pay and strategic support for fighters’ personal brands.
“I like that the legends get paid,” Woodley said. “To get paid like a boxer for MMA is crazy, and I’m excited to be part of a new wave.”
Woodley has long been an advocate for fighter rights, often criticizing the pay structure in traditional MMA promotions. GFL’s model, which mirrors boxing’s lucrative payouts, aligns with his vision for the sport’s future.

Seeking Redemption in Superfights
Since leaving UFC after a loss at UFC 260 on March 27, 2021, Woodley has missed competing in MMA. He sees GFL as a chance to reignite his career and help build a new organization. However, he’s also eager to finally participate in high-profile matchups—something he felt was lacking during his UFC tenure.
“I feel like I’ll get to fight in supermatches,” Woodley explained. “I never really got the chance to fight in supermatches when I was in the UFC. I asked for the Bisping fight, GSP, Nate, Nick, Conor—guys who were around my weight. They just didn’t want to fight, and you can’t force people to fight.”
Woodley believes GFL will offer the matchups fans have been waiting for, with signed opponents that will “raise eyebrows.” This opportunity represents a fresh start and a chance to compete on his terms.
