Stephen Thompson Calls Out Robbie Lawler For A Fight In Early 2019

UFC welterweight Stephen Thompson says he wants to fight Robbie Lawler early next year.

Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson isn’t known for calling people out but made a bold move last evening when he took to social media to lay down the challenge to Robbie Lawler.

Speaking via his Twitter account, Thompson put the challenge out there for early 2019.

“I heard your going to be ready early next year @Ruthless_RL I know a guy who will be ready then too…Let’s give the fans what they want! I’m bringing the heat back, and you know this fight will be FIRE! @ufc”

Thompson (14-3-1) is coming off the back of a loss to Darren Till at UFC Liverpool earlier this year. The American challenged for the UFC welterweight title at UFC 205 and UFC 209, but on both separate occasions failed to defeat the champion Tyron Woodley. Thompson has only won one fight in his last four with a victory against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 217 via a unanimous decision.

Lawler (28-12) is coming off a long-term knee injury and hasn’t fought since his loss to Rafael dos Anjos in Dec. 2017. The 36-year-old reigned as the UFC welterweight champion during the period of Dec. 2014 until July 2016 when he lost to the current champion Tyron Woodley at UFC 201. After suffering a torn ACL in his fight with dos Anjos last December, Lawler indicated that he wouldn’t be able to return until next year at the earliest.

MMA Junkie previously reported that a fight between Lawler and Thompson was in the works for an unannounced event next January.

Time will tell whether the fight will ever come to fruition, but no doubt fans in the MMA community will be hoping that they get to see the two men share the Octagon next year.
