Sean O’Malley Eyes Boxing Debut, Ryan Garcia Responds with Mockery!
Cross-Sport Ambitions
Bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley is eyeing a lucrative pivot to boxing—following Ryan Garcia’s stunning performance last weekend, he could be an intriguing dance partner for “Sugar” as he steps into the ring for the first time. On The MMA Hour, Garcia recently boasted he would crush O’Malley in an MMA match, sparking a reaction from the UFC’s bantamweight champ. Yet, O’Malley isn’t quite ready to switch to boxing gloves just yet. He still has commitments in the UFC, including potential title fights against Ilia Topuria and a clash with top-ranked Merab Dvalishvili.
“I’m not there yet,” Sean O’Malley commented on his YouTube channel regarding his boxing debut. “I still need to get bigger. Two damn crazy performances more and then we can talk about doing whatever the hell we want.”
Garcia’s Wild Card
O’Malley described Garcia’s capabilities with a mix of awe and realism: “I think (Garcia) is that kind of crazy, (but) also that kind of good. He probably trained hard. Some people just have different genes. I couldn’t do it… He’s going to make money. Let’s see what he does in the next two weeks. Winning such a big fight, earning so much money, having those nasty people around him, let’s see where he’s at mentally in two weeks.”
UFC’s Conditional Approval
The major barrier to O’Malley’s boxing debut could be the UFC, which is understandably hesitant to allow one of its biggest stars to potentially lose in another sport. However, according to O’Malley, this hurdle has already been cleared. “They told me, ‘You can have a boxing match, 100 percent, if it makes enough money for us.’ So the opportunity is there, it just has to be financially beneficial,” he revealed.
