Sean O’Malley Eyes Redemption: “BECOME UFC CHAMPION AGAIN”
A Tough Loss at UFC 306 – Celebrated New Year in Japan with Rizin
Sean O’Malley welcomed 2025 in Japan alongside Rizin Fighting Federation. It has been nearly four months since O’Malley suffered a crushing defeat at UFC 306, where he lost the bantamweight title to Merab Dvalishvili. The bout marked O’Malley’s second title defense, and while it lasted the full five rounds, Dvalishvili dominated the fight. With only fleeting moments of success, O’Malley ultimately fell short, losing via unanimous decision. His reign as champion came to an abrupt end, lasting just over a year. Following the loss, O’Malley underwent hip surgery, which he is currently rehabilitating.
Ringing in the New Year in Japan
O’Malley’s return to the octagon remains uncertain. However, his fans were treated to a glimpse of his life outside the cage through his recent New Year’s celebrations in Japan. In a video shared on his YouTube channel, O’Malley documented his journey to Tokyo and later to Saitama. He attended Rizin 49, the promotion’s final event of the year, held at Super Saitama Arena on December 31. Alongside attending fights, O’Malley also participated in various media appearances. Before heading to Saitama, O’Malley explored Tokyo, visiting notable attractions like owl cafés, bustling city streets, and even stopping for a bite at McDonald’s.

Focused on Regaining the Title
In the same video, O’Malley addressed his plans for the future, specifically his ambitions to reclaim the UFC bantamweight belt. On January 18, Merab Dvalishvili is set to defend the title against Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC 311. O’Malley shared his thoughts on the fight and his hopes for a title shot against the winner.
“My main focus right now is to become UFC champion again,” O’Malley stated, adding, “Ideally, Merab wins so I can get my rematch, but if Umar wins, then it’ll be Umar. What I want next is a title fight, hopefully in mid-2025.”
O’Malley’s confidence and determination to reclaim his spot at the top of the bantamweight division are clear as he looks to put the setback at UFC 306 behind him.
