Sean O’Malley Confident Against Dvalishvili Ahead of UFC 306

Sean O’Malley believes he’s already in Merab Dvalishvili’s head as they prepare to clash in the UFC 306 main event on September 14 at the Sphere in Las Vegas. O’Malley, the reigning bantamweight champion, acknowledges that while Dvalishvili has been calling him out for years, the Georgian fighter never garnered much attention until now.

“Merab’s been calling me out for a while,” O’Malley stated, “but it just never got any traction. No one ever was like, ‘Yo, you should have fought Merab.’ It’s like you can be so boring for so long that it becomes interesting.”

Mental Warfare

O’Malley has taken notice of Dvalishvili’s agitation, particularly towards comments made by O’Malley’s head coach, Tim Welch. Dvalishvili has responded by accusing Welch of disrespect, but O’Malley sees this as a sign of mental vulnerability.

“It’s too easy (to get under his skin),” O’Malley said. “He needs to work on that. He is flustered. He’s worried about what Tim’s saying, he’s worried about my boy Schmitty in his DMs, he’s blocking a bunch of ‘Suga’ fans. I think he’s flustered.”

The Sphere and O’Malley’s Focus

Regarding the unique venue at Sphere in Las Vegas, O’Malley remains indifferent. “It’s going to be in the Octagon, that’s all I care about. The Sphere is going to be cool for other people…but for me, it’s the same thing,” he remarked. O’Malley emphasized that no matter the venue, his focus remains locked on the fight itself.

O’Malley knows that Dvalishvili’s impressive 10-fight win streak and his relentless pressure present a formidable challenge. However, O’Malley remains confident in his own abilities, predicting a quick finish.

Reflecting on his victory over Dvalishvili’s teammate, Aljamain Sterling, O’Malley remarked, “Aljo probably smokes him in training and he just saw what I did to his boy. Be careful what you wish for. He says he’s been wanting this fight for a long time, but now that it’s real, I bet he’s like, ‘Ah sh*t.’”
