Robert Whittaker: “I’ve Beaten Yoel Romero Twice Now; The Only Thing Left To Do Is Fight Him When He Has A Weapon’
UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker defeated Yoel Romero for the second last month at UFC 225 but still there are some people calling for a third showdown between the pair.
Whittaker first defeated Romero back at International Fight Week 2017 when he beat the Cuban via unanimous decision to win the interim UFC middleweight title at UFC 213.
Whittaker was then made the official UFC middleweight champion after Georges St-Pierre vacated the belt late last year, and then went on to defend it for the time last month in Chicago when he defeated Romero via a split decision following in a ‘Fight of the Year’ contender five-round war.
Some people in the MMA community felt Romero won their second fight though and shortly after they called for a third showdown between the pair.
Speaking to Jim Edwards this week, Whittaker laughed off the suggestion a third fight between the two of them should take place.
“Well yeah, I find it funny because when you look at those fights, and when you look at the way things have gone, I’ve beaten Yoel Romero twice with a handicap.”
“He didn’t even make the weight the second time. I mean, what do people want here?
“The only thing left for me to do is fight him when he’s a got a weapon,” Whittaker said with a laugh.
Whether it happens or not, fans likely won’t see the Australian back in the Octagon until 2019.
During the bout with Romero, Whittaker broke his right hand in the first round and has recently undergone surgery to have it repaired.
Whittaker revealed that he will start a two month rehabilitation program in the next few weeks and only then will he be able to return to full training where he said he wanted to work on a number of areas of his game before fighting again.
MMANytt will be on the ground for the entirety of International Fight Week next week.
