Dustin Poirier Discloses Injuries from UFC 302: “Fight Life”

UFC veteran Dustin Poirier remains undecided about retirement following his grueling bout against Islam Makhachev at UFC 302. Regardless of his decision, Poirier will need significant time off due to the severe injuries he sustained in the title fight.

On social media, Poirier detailed the extent of his injuries from the lightweight championship bout, which he lost via submission in the fifth round. Despite the loss, Poirier delivered a tough challenge to Makhachev, but the effort came at a high cost.

– “My nose is badly broken, my ribs are broken, and my ACL is partially torn,” revealed Dustin Poirier in a post on X. “Fight life.”

Immediately after the fight, Poirier spoke about his injuries, mentioning that his nose was “crushed” and that he had sustained a knee injury during a takedown defense in the third round.



Pre-existing Injuries and Fight Preparation

Poirier’s long MMA career has been marred by injuries, and this fight was no exception. His coach, Yves Edwards, disclosed that Poirier was already dealing with a rib injury before the match, which limited his grappling and wrestling training in the final weeks of his camp.

Medical Suspension and Future Uncertainty

Poirier now faces an indefinite medical suspension from the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board. He will require clearance from an orthopedic specialist for his knee and from an ENT specialist for his nose before he can return to competition. Whether this marks the end of Poirier’s illustrious UFC career remains to be seen  .

UFC 302 Fight Card Highlights

The main event saw Islam Makhachev retaining his lightweight title with a D’Arce choke submission victory over Poirier at 2:42 of the fifth round. The co-main event featured Sean Strickland defeating Paulo Costa via split decision, adding another thrilling bout to the night’s lineup  .
