Ovince Saint Preux Wants The Winner Of Daniel Cormier vs Volkan Oezdemir
It’s been a bit of dismal year for the UFC light heavyweight division, but with 2017 drawing in, things are starting to fall into place for the crème of the crop at 205-pounds.
Two UFC light heavyweight title fights took place this year and both were shrouded in controversy. Back in April, the champion Daniel Cormier was involved in a bizarre weigh-in incident when, in plain sight of everyone in the room, he grabbed a towel placed in front of him to lessen the downwards the pressure on the scale. Cormier went on to get away with it and the next evening he defeated Anthony “Rumble” Johnson for the second time in as many years.
With that ordeal over, the highly controversial figure of Jon Jones re-entered the title mix and the craziness didn’t stop there. Jones defeated Cormier via a brutal third round TKO at UFC 214 in Anaheim, California and reclaimed the UFC title that was stripped from him two years previous. However, just four weeks later, Jones was once again stripped of the title when for the second time in his career he was flagged by the USADA anti-doping program for a positive test taken post the weigh-ins at UFC 214.
The title is now back on the shoulder of Cormier and the next man to challenge for the belt isn’t whiter than white either. Two weeks ago, Volkan Oezdemir was arrested on a charge of aggravated battery earlier in the year. Despite the charge, the UFC booked Oezdemir to face Cormier at UFC 220 on Jan. 20 in Boston.
With all this going on, one man who has been keeping his head down and racking up wins in the background in Ovince Saint Preux. The Von Flue choke specialist has racked up three wins on the bounce since April with victories over Marcos Rogério de Lima, Yushin Okami and Corey Anderson. Many had questioned whether Saint Preux would get the nod for the next title shot following Oezdemir’s recent issues, alas, when the fight was made, Saint Preux made it very clear that if he’s not next, he wants the winner of Cormier vs Oezdemir.
“Oezdemir deserves the shot,” Saint Preux wrote humbly on Twitter. “But, whoever wins, I want the next shot.”
Oedzmir deserves the shot. But whoever wins, I want the next shot.
