Oscar De La Hoya ATTACKS Canelo: “An Arrogant Piece of Sh*t”

Rising tensions as De La Hoya slams Canelo’s choices.

Rising Tensions Between Former Partners

Oscar De La Hoya has taken another jab at his former protégé, Canelo Alvarez, as tensions between the two continue to escalate. The relationship, which soured after Alvarez parted ways with De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions in 2020, has become increasingly contentious, with De La Hoya not holding back in his recent social media outbursts. In his latest attack, De La Hoya referred to Canelo as “an arrogant piece of sh*t,” fueling the ongoing feud between the two.

Widespread Criticism of Canelo

De La Hoya is not alone in his criticism of Canelo. UFC President Dana White, UFC star Conor McGregor, and Saudi Arabian promoter Turki Alalshikh have all expressed their dissatisfaction with Canelo’s choice of opponents, particularly ahead of his September 14 fight against Edgar Berlanga. The common theme among the critics is that Berlanga is not a challenging enough opponent, and that Canelo is deliberately avoiding tougher, more lucrative matchups, such as a potential fight against David Benavidez.

Social Media Outburst and Accusations

In his “Clap Back Thursdays” series on social media, De La Hoya did not mince words.

“So it turns out, I’m not the only one that thinks Canelo is an arrogant piece of sh*t,” De La Hoya said, emphasizing that Turki Alalshikh shared similar sentiments after Canelo allegedly refused to engage in negotiations with him.

De La Hoya claimed that Canelo’s high pricing has made him undesirable even to Saudi promoters, who are eager to stage high-profile bouts.

Canelo’s Recent Performance and Future Outlook

Despite the criticisms, Canelo has maintained an impressive record, winning four consecutive fights since his failed attempt to capture Dmitry Bivol’s WBA light heavyweight title. His victories include a trilogy bout against Gennady Golovkin and super middleweight title defenses against John Ryder, Jermell Charlo, and Jaime Munguía. However, his choice to fight Berlanga has been met with skepticism from De La Hoya and others, who believe it does little to bolster his legacy or excite fans.

De La Hoya further questioned Berlanga’s popularity, particularly among Puerto Rican fans, and echoed Conor McGregor’s prediction that UFC 306, scheduled for the same night at the Sphere in Las Vegas, will overshadow Canelo’s fight. “This fight will not do well on Sept. 14,” De La Hoya stated, attributing it not only to the lackluster matchup but also to the fierce competition from the UFC event.

As the fight approaches, the ongoing criticism raises questions about Canelo’s future choices and whether he will continue to face accusations of avoiding more challenging opponents. The spotlight is now on how Canelo will respond, both in and out of the ring, to these growing concerns.
