Ngannou’s Next Move: MMA Showdown with Wilder?

After a nail-biting bout against Fury, Ngannou ponders a shift to MMA and a face-off with Deontay Wilder.

Ngannou Mulls Over Future After Shocking Fury Match

In a shocking turn of events, Francis Ngannou, former UFC heavyweight champion, nearly upset WBC heavyweight boxing champ Tyson Fury this past Saturday in Riyadh. The fight, orchestrated by Saudi royal adviser Turki Alalshikh, concluded in a split-decision win for Fury after 10 competitive rounds.

Ngannou, despite the loss, showcased surprising resilience and skill. He not only went toe-to-toe with Fury, but also emerged from the match virtually unscathed compared to Fury’s black eye. His performance has opened up various possibilities for his future, including a yet undisclosed offer from Alalshikh and potential MMA fights.

On Monday, Ngannou revealed on The MMA Hour that there have been serious discussions regarding a potential MMA fight with former heavyweight boxing champ Deontay Wilder, who has been training in MMA and expressed interest in switching the ring for the cage. Ngannou stated,

“I think that’s a good idea… That’s something that can potentially happen. Nothing is set, but it’s been something coming to my attention.” He also reflected on the change in dynamics for Wilder, saying, “It’s going to be a different beast for him… He’s going to be the one climbing the mountain.”

Despite suggestions from many, Ngannou is skeptical about a boxing rematch with Fury, who is already scheduled to face Oleksandr Usyk on December 23. He believes that after underestimating him once, Fury may be cautious about a quick return to the ring, particularly in light of his physical state post-match.

Ngannou reflected on the unexpected outcome and the judges’ decision saying it left a

“slight bitter taste,” but is also ready to demonstrate his capabilities further. He shared his experience of holding back initially, stating, “Because from the first round… I’m thinking already Round 10… All that lack of experience is what was playing against me… But I think next time is going to be different, because I have a little bit of the feeling of it.”

With Ngannou’s debut in professional boxing stirring the combat sports world and the potential Wilder fight on the horizon, both fighters’ landscapes are certainly shifting. Regardless of the direction Ngannou chooses, his performance against Fury stands as a testament to his prowess and potential in the world of combat sports.
