Mike Tyson reveals secret behind monstrous physique
A healthy diet can go a long way, and a vegan diet helped Mike Tyson make an unbelievable transformation.
Former world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson certainly has a story filled with ups and downs. From dominating the sport of boxing to a slew of personal problems, his story is one that shows great change. Since announcing his comeback to boxing, the former champ has made headline after headline, enticing the entire combat sports world.
One of the biggest changes Tyson has made throughout the years has been a physical one. After retiring from boxing Tyson gained an unhealthy amount of weight. However in an interview with ABC News, he revealed how he managed to get his weight under control. The secret to Tyson losing over 63 kg/ 140 lbs was, apparently, veganism.
“I was real carnivorous [sic] when I was training for fights – a lot of meat, cheese, bread. I devoured everything besides pork. I used to eat a lot. As I got older I didn’t like the way I was feeling. I had a lot of arthritis, joint problems and I was morbidly obese [sic]. My wife who was not my wife at the time, she changes her diet all the time. I says, ‘what is this you’re doing?’ And she says, ‘I’m eating vegan for a month or two weeks.’ Well, I said that’s what I’m going to do too, I want to do that. Cause I was just eating things without even figuring out what they are. And that’s how I’ve been for four and a half years.”

Tyson has always been one to raw inspiration from history. From studying great warriors such as Napoleon and Sun Tzu to other historical figures, he has often had receipts to back up his claims. Veganism has a string of benefits, and has been much more common throughout history than many in today’s society think. For Tyson a large part that contributed to him trying veganism was, unsurprisingly, the revelation that most Roman gladiators ate vegan.
“I found out the greatest gladiators, the greatest ones in Roman times, they were all vegan. That’s fighting to the death! The best gladiators, I didn’t say all of them, when they looked at their bone marrow and did the research, they found that they were vegans. No meat particles in them.” (ABC later fact checked and confirmed this)
Veganism is rapidly growing around the world. Aside from the health benefits and the strong ethical arguments in favour of veganism, there is a substantial and beneficial environmental impact as well. Many celebrities such as Joaquim Phoenix and Leonardo DiCaprio are vegans. Brothers and MMA fan favourites Nick and Nate Diaz have eaten almost exclusively vegan during their time in the UFC.
Ex world champion Shannon Briggs recently took to social media to claim that he will fight Tyson in the latter’s comeback. As of now no other parties involved have confirmed this claim.
