Michelle Waterson Eyeing Fight With Karolina Kowalkiewicz Next
Michelle Waterson is back to winning ways after defeating Courtney Casey two weeks ago at UFC on Fox 29 and she’s now eyeing up a fight with fellow strawweight contender Karolina Kowalkiewicz.
Speaking on the Slip n’ Dip podcast this week, Waterson spoke about what it felt like to get back in the win column following two prior defeats and then what was next on the horizon. After saying she’d like to return later in the year after summer, Waterson then confirmed that she has her eyes set on a showdown with Polish fighter Kowalkiewicz.
“I’ve not [fought Karolina yet], you must be reading my mind,” Waterson said.
“I think that would be a great fight.”
“I’m looking also forward to seeing that fight between Claudia [Gadelha] and Carla [Esparza] because they got some history between the two of them.”
At 32-years-old Waterson knows that the average retirement age of a female mixed martial artist isn’t too far. Whilst most females fighters then go on to start families, Waterson is a rare case in the fact that she already has a seven-year-old daughter. Whilst this may keep her fighting until a slightly later age, Waterson still has a rough retirement age in mind and still plans on having further children.
“It makes a big difference because as a male fighter, you can continue to have a family because it’s the wife that carries the baby,” Waterson said.
“My daughter is seven and I do want more children, but I also have to take advantage of the time that I have right now.
“I feel like there’s so much that I haven’t shown the world what I can do and I want to get those out.
“I want to be able to leave the sport knowing that I left it all in the Octagon.
“I have been fighting for a very long time though, over eleven years, so I’m probably going to give myself another three or four years.”
