Dana White: Conor McGregor on Muhammad Ali’s Level

White compares McGregor’s mind games to Ali

Conor McGregor shares at least one trait with “The Greatest,” according to UFC President Dana White. White made this comparison during his appearance on the Flagrant podcast, where he discussed McGregor’s behavior outside the octagon and his upcoming fight against Michel Chandler at UFC 303 on June 29 in Las Vegas.

Master of Mental Warfare

White believes that McGregor’s antics and mind games are reminiscent of Muhammad Ali, widely regarded as a pioneer in psychological tactics in sports. White stated,

“I will tell you this and I don’t ever like to compare people to Muhammad Ali because to me he’s the f*cking greatest, not just for what he did in fighting, but as a human. But when it comes to mental warfare, Ali and Conor are on the same level. The two best of all time”

The Power of Trash Talk

McGregor’s rise to fame as a two-division UFC champion is marked by his ability to verbally dismantle his opponents before fight night. Notable victories over Jose Aldo, Eddie Alvarez, and Nate Diaz were all preceded by intense pre-fight trash talk that got into his opponents’ heads. White noted,

“McGregor has become one of the most popular and talked about fighters ever, thanks to the verbal barrage he unleashes at his opponents prior to every fight” .

Similarly, Muhammad Ali was known for his sharp wit and psychological tactics. Ali’s ability to predict rounds and create memorable quotes and poems helped him dominate the mental aspect of his bouts. White sees a clear parallel between Ali’s and McGregor’s strategies in breaking down their opponents mentally.

Future of McGregor in the UFC

Since his victory over Eddie Alvarez in 2016, McGregor has had a limited number of fights, including a high-profile boxing match against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Despite his legal issues and questions about his commitment to fighting, White views any appearance by McGregor in the octagon as a significant event.

“It’s at the point now where when these guys do show up and fight, it’s fun. It’s fun when they show up and fight,” White said

Upcoming Fight Card Adjustments for USA

For UFC 303, scheduled for June 29 in Las Vegas, the event will begin at 7:00 PM PDT / 10:00 PM EDT. This highly anticipated event is expected to draw significant attention, not only for McGregor’s return but also for the potential fireworks leading up to the fight.
