Matt Hamill Criticizes Dana White and Responds to Jon Jones: Let’s Fight for the Belt

Hamill challenges Jones for a rematch after rule change

Former UFC fighter Matt Hamill has taken shots at UFC President Dana White and issued a challenge to current heavyweight champion Jon Jones for a rematch. Hamill remains the only person with an official victory over Jones, a result of Jones being disqualified for illegal 12-to-6 elbows in their 2009 bout. Recently, the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) changed the rule, making these strikes legal. Jones reacted to this by asking White to help remove the loss from his record.

Hamill’s Proposal for a Rematch

Matt Hamill, known for being the first deaf competitor in UFC history and a standout on The Ultimate Fighter, expressed his thoughts on the matter via social media. He proposed a rematch to finally settle the issue:

“Let’s cut [to the chase Dana White] — I know you’re desperate to get [Jon Jones] an undefeated record. I see how you want to profit from that! [It’s] also why you bail him out of all the other things.

“How about a rematch? I’ll be happy to fight him for a heavyweight title. If I beat him, I want a UFC belt. Let me know if Stipe Miocic backs out. I’ll take [it on] short notice, just remember he already lost to me!”

Hamill competed 15 times in the UFC, winning 10 of those bouts. Although he hasn’t fought in the UFC since a loss to Thiago Silva at UFC Fight Night 29 nearly 11 years ago, he has won his last two fights on the regional circuit, including a split decision victory in Maverick MMA in April 2018.

Jon Jones’ Reaction

Jon Jones responded to Hamill’s challenge by clarifying that he is not interested in a rematch:

“Honestly, I was just blindsided. He’s a fellow upstate New York guy. Over these years I’ve always given him mad love. Funny how people are. I’m not even mad at him though, I understand it’s his claim to fame. Just wish he would have went about this a different way. It’s whatever.”

Jones emphasized that he is not seeking a rematch with Hamill and questioned if Hamill’s call-out was merely an attempt to stay relevant.

The Future for Jon Jones

Jon Jones has several major fights lined up, including an upcoming title defense against Stipe Miocic. While Hamill’s challenge has generated headlines, it is highly unlikely that the UFC will arrange a rematch between the two, especially considering Hamill’s long absence from the sport and his current age.
