Khamzat Chimaev Reveals the Truth: “Why I Got So Sick”
A Challenging Return After Health Struggles
Khamzat Chimaev, after battling persistent health issues, is preparing to face Robert Whittaker at UFC 308. Chimaev’s last appearance in the octagon was on October 21, 2023, against Kamaru Usman. Despite not dominating like before, he secured a hard-fought majority decision victory, proving his resilience against a former champion. This fight was seen as Chimaev’s most significant test, and the victory marked a potential breakthrough in his middleweight journey.
Chimaev was initially scheduled to meet Whittaker at UFC on ABC 6 on June 22, but severe illness forced him to withdraw. After a long period of inactivity and uncertainty, he is now set for a comeback at UFC 308. Speaking with Kevin Iole, Chimaev opened up about his struggles and the toll his training took on his health.
“I am always happy, I always want to fight, you know. Being healthy is good, everything is good, in great shape. Ready for the fight,” Chimaev expressed with a smile.
Overtraining: A Lesson Learned
Chimaev’s swift rise in the UFC has been marked by his relentless work ethic. Debuting in 2020, he set a record for the shortest time between wins, fighting twice in just ten days. Reflecting on his training habits, he admitted pushing himself beyond his limits, spending six hours a day in the gym without sufficient recovery. This grueling regime, combined with extreme conditions like excessive air conditioning, contributed to his decline.
“No one works as hard as me. I kill myself in the gym for six hours a day, without recovery or rest, for two months straight. That’s why I got so sick,” he revealed.
Experts agree that Chimaev’s intense training schedule likely weakened his immune system, leading to repeated illnesses. In previous incidents, he even experienced coughing up blood, nearly forcing him into retirement.

Overcoming Doubts and Preparing for the Future
Chimaev admitted that returning too soon after his initial illness worsened his condition, landing him back in the hospital. This time, he has learned from his mistakes and adjusted his approach. He now emphasizes balance and recovery in his training routine to prevent further health setbacks. Despite doubts during his recovery, Chimaev is motivated and confident ahead of the Whittaker fight.
“When you’re sick, you don’t think the same. A lot of strange thoughts go through your mind. But now, I’m healthy and happy,” he shared.
Chimaev has great respect for Whittaker’s achievements but remains confident in his abilities. As he prepares for their match, he firmly believes he is the best in the world and is ready to prove it.
“He (Whittaker) is one of the best I’ll face, but I believe I’m the best in the world,” Chimaev asserted.
