Will Chimaev Dominate the Middleweight Division Like He Has Before?

Chimaev’s Dominance in the UFC

Khamzat Chimaev has established himself as one of the most dominant fighters in the UFC since his debut on July 16, 2020, against John Phillips. Known for his relentless pace and skill, Chimaev has overwhelmed nearly all of his opponents, with only one or two fights posing significant challenges. Most recently, on October 26, 2024, at UFC 308, Chimaev faced former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker in what was anticipated as his toughest test yet. Whittaker, a seasoned veteran, was expected to mount a solid defense against Chimaev. However, Chimaev showcased his unparalleled abilities, forcing Whittaker to tap out in under two minutes.

The Call for a Title Opportunity

Following his victory over Whittaker, demands for Chimaev to fight for the middleweight title have intensified. Fans, analysts, and fellow fighters have largely agreed that Chimaev is ready for a title shot. Currently, the middleweight champion is South Africa’s Dricus du Plessis, who will defend his title for the second time at UFC 312 on February 8, 2025, against Sean Strickland. Du Plessis won the belt by defeating Strickland in their first encounter, and many believed Chimaev deserved to face the champion ahead of Strickland. Although this did not materialize, UFC President Dana White has confirmed that Chimaev is next in line for a title shot.
