A Dream Match in the Making: Khamzat Chimaev Eyes Historic Bout with Jon Jones
In a recent appearance on the ‘Smile 2 Jannah’ podcast, Khamzat Chimaev, the rising star in the middleweight division, expressed his admiration for Jon Jones, the reigning heavyweight champion and one of the greatest fighters in MMA history. “Jon Jones is still the best fighter in the world right now,” Chimaev stated. “He has the most title defenses, he’s a champion in two weight classes, and he’s never lost. He’s the youngest champion in UFC history. When you talk about MMA, everyone knows Jon Jones. In history, there’s nobody like him” (source: Smile 2 Jannah Podcast).
Chimaev, who remains undefeated in his professional career, is close to securing a title shot in the middleweight division. However, he dreams of a fight with Jones, a matchup that transcends weight classes. Reflecting on a potential bout, Chimaev said, “Of course, he’s the dream match for anyone wanting to be in the history books. I’m younger than him. I hope he doesn’t leave this job, so I can have this match too.”
Regarding a hypothetical clash between the two, Chimaev confidently stated, “It depends on the weight class. He’s a heavyweight now. If you ask me? I definitely think I would win. It’s a tough match for anyone. He fought twice with my training partner Alexander Gustafsson – they had a great match.”
“I became a fighter with Alex; I have trained with him. I really want to fight [Jones] so it would be a big historic match if we fight. Since Alex gave him the best match in history, maybe now it’s time for me to face him too?”
