Khalil Rountree: “Feels Like I Won”

Rountree’s bravery earns global admiration despite UFC 307 loss.

A Memorable Battle Despite the Loss

In the UFC 307 main event, light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira faced off against challenger Khalil Rountree in a fight that defied expectations. Many believed that Rountree stood little chance, but after two rounds, he proved them wrong. Rountree applied constant pressure on Pereira, even managing to knock him down, something few thought possible.

However, in the third round, Pereira began adjusting to Rountree’s explosive style. By reading Rountree’s attacks better, Pereira was able to control the distance between them more effectively. With just 30 seconds remaining in the fourth round, Pereira overwhelmed Rountree with a combination of heavy strikes and knees, forcing Rountree to the ground.

Despite the loss, Rountree has received an outpouring of support and praise for his heart, resilience, and technical ability. In an interview with Kevin Iole, Rountree shared his thoughts on the fight and the fans’ reactions to his performance.

“I was happy. But to be honest, I wasn’t too surprised. The fans there (Salt Lake City) are absolutely incredible people. Salt Lake is supportive regardless of the sport. It was amazing, everything I could have hoped for,” Rountree commented.

Earning Fans’ Respect Across the World

For Rountree, the appreciation from the fans has been particularly meaningful. Competing in his first title match, many fighters might have found it hard to deal with a loss at such a high-stakes moment. However, Rountree has a different outlook. Despite the defeat, he feels like a winner due to the overwhelming support he received both before and after the match.

“Right after the fight, I had to go to the hospital to get stitches. I didn’t have my phone, so I wasn’t aware of the response to the match. When I got home at 5 a.m. and checked my phone, I was shocked. I had no idea I had earned the respect of so many fans around the world. It feels like I won the fight,” Rountree shared, laughing.

Reflecting on his preparation for the fight, Rountree acknowledged that his team had prepared well for many of Pereira’s signature attacks, particularly his lethal left hook. However, there was one weapon in Pereira’s arsenal that surprised him: the jab.

“We didn’t account for the strength of his jab. His left hook is his most dangerous weapon, and we knew that distance would be a challenge. But when he started landing his jab in the third or fourth round, I couldn’t see it. It was quick, and not only quick but also really heavy,” Rountree noted.

Looking Forward to Growth and Improvement

Following the fight, some critics suggested that Rountree struggled to maintain his pace in the later rounds. He disagrees with this assessment, asserting that his performance was more a reflection of Pereira’s power than any conditioning issue.

Looking to the future, Rountree sees this fight as an opportunity for growth. While his exact return is yet to be determined, he remains optimistic and believes the match against the reigning champion has opened up new possibilities for his career.

“I’m looking forward to coming back and fighting again. But it will probably be in the first quarter of next year. This fight showed that I’m ready to compete at this level, but also that I have a lot of room to learn and grow,” Rountree explained.
