Kelvin Gastelum Admits He’s Still Got An Eye On Returning To Welterweight
Kelvin Gastelum is coming off a win over former middleweight champion Michael Bisping in his last fight but he admitted yesterday he still has eyes on the welterweight division.
Speaking backstage at the UFC 220 weigh-ins yesterday to TSN Sports, Gastelum spoke about his immediate future and he admitted that he was in a state of limbo right now.
“Yeah it is [still my home],” Gastelum said. “But yeah it (welterweight) something I have my eye on, but I’m just going to see what happens in the next few fights.
“Whether it be at welterweight or middleweight, I’m just going to see. Derek Brunson and Jacare Souza fight, then we got the Luke and Yoel fight. I’m just on standby. I’m not really sure as to where I’m at in the title picture, but I’m just going to see what happens.”
Gastelum went onto admit that he was disappointed to have been overlooked for a UFC middleweight title shot, but he added that he will fully expects to fight Robert Whittaker later down the line.
“Oh absolutely, he’s the champion you know, he’s got the target on him,” Gastelum said. “But also I think, me and him are the youngest guys in the division and at some point, we’re going to have to fight.
“I think we’re the same age and we’re two guys that haven’t even reached their prime yet. We’re going to end up fighting eventually.”
When asked if he though Yoel Romero deserved to get the nod ahead of him, Gastelum said he didn’t, but that it wasn’t something he was going to dwell on.
“Yeah I definitely should have,” Gastelum said. “He’s coming off a loss in the Robert Whittaker fight, title fight, but it is what it is. He’s the number one contender.
“I would’ve like to have fought the number one contender, but it is what it is. These things happen and the show must go on. I’m waiting to see what happens in the division. Who wins? Who loses? I’m just on standby right now.
“2018 is the year of the gold for me.”
