Jon Jones Faces Two Misdemeanors – Risks Jail Time
UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones has been charged with two misdemeanors following an incident with a drug-test agent earlier this year. According to Bernalillo County records, Jones faces charges of assault and interference with communication. He is scheduled for a virtual bond hearing on Wednesday, July 17, at 9:15 a.m. local time (5:15 p.m. CET).
If convicted, Jones could face up to a year in jail and fines totaling $1,500 for assault and $1,000 for interference with communication.
The Incident
On March 30, a Drug Free Sport International (DFSI) agent visited Jones’ home in Albuquerque to collect a urine sample. Initially cooperative, Jones became combative when he struggled to provide a sample and was offered a blood test instead. He allegedly threatened to sue the agent, took her phone, and began recording the interaction. The agent reported that Jones smelled of alcohol and that his behavior was threatening.
The agent claims Jones put her phone in his pocket, “got into her face,” and said, “Why you f*cking people come so early? Do you know what happens to people who come to my house? They end up dead.” The police complaint states the agent was “terrified,” “afraid,” and “felt her heart pounding” after Jones’ implied threat.

Legal Consequences
In the U.S., misdemeanors are considered less severe than felonies but can still result in significant penalties. For Jones, the assault charge carries up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,500, while the interference charge can lead to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Jones’ Return to UFC
Jones last competed in March 2023, claiming the UFC heavyweight title against Ciryl Gane. He was set to defend his title against Stipe Miocic in November 2023 but withdrew due to injury. The fight is expected to be rescheduled for UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden in November 2024.
