Rogan Criticizes Holloway vs. Gaethje Booking for UFC 300
UFC commentator Joe Rogan has voiced his concerns about the scheduled matchup between former featherweight champion Max Holloway and “BMF” champion Justin Gaethje at UFC 300. While no main event for the historic event has been revealed, several top-tier fights are confirmed, with this bout drawing particular attention. Rogan expects an incredible fight but believes it’s a mistake for Holloway.
“Know what I hate?” Rogan commented on his podcast. “Max is a fantastic featherweight – Dustin Poirier beat him at lightweight. I think the lightweights are a bit too big for him.” He added, “Moreover, Max is on the brink of a title shot. Once (Alexander) Volkanovski is done with (Ilia Topuria), Max is likely next. It’s 100% there.”

Holloway’s last lightweight fight was against Dustin Poirier in 2019. Despite moments of success, he suffered a tough loss to “The Diamond”. Poirier’s strikes seemed significantly impactful on Holloway. Considering Gaethje’s reputation as one of the most brutal and ruthless lightweights, a challenging fight awaits the former featherweight champion.
However, the high risk could yield a high reward. A victory over Gaethje would propel Holloway into a top lightweight position, potentially earning him a shot against the division’s champion, Islam Makhachev. Having lost to Alexander Volkanovski three times previously, a fourth match seems unlikely, especially if Volkanovski remains featherweight champion after facing Topuria at UFC 299.
