Joanna Jedrzejczyk will proudly represent her home country of Poland as she carries the Olympic flame as part of the torch relay that will eventually land in South Korea.
Jedrzejczyk revealed the news on Tuesday as reported by Sportowefacty in Poland.
“It’s a huge honor. MKOL (International Olympic Committee) decided that me, as a representative of mixed martial arts will carry the Olympic fire,” Jedrzejczyk said during a radio appearance. “MMA is far away from being Olympic competition, so it’s huge merit for me to represent our country on so huge international area. I’m very happy with that.”
Jedrzejczyk joins fellow UFC fighter Antonio Rogerio Nogueira as a torch bearer after he carried the flame for his home country of Brazil back in 2016.
The Olympic flame will be carried from country to country, around the world, until finally landing in PyeongChang, South Korea for the start of the winter games in February.
