Islam Makhachev: “She’s Too Nervous”

Makhachev Shares Rare Insight Into Family Life and Career Pressure

Historic Milestone on the Line – Discusses Parents’ Views on His Career

Islam Makhachev’s mother cannot bear to watch her son fight. The highly anticipated UFC 311 lightweight title bout between Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan is just days away. Makhachev, the reigning champion from Dagestan, aims to defend his belt for the fourth time. A victory would make him the first lightweight in UFC history to achieve four consecutive title defenses.

Additionally, Makhachev would tie Anderson Silva’s record for the longest winning streak in UFC history with 16 consecutive wins. These achievements underscore his dominance and place him among the sport’s legends.

Records Hold No Appeal to Makhachev

In numerous interviews, Makhachev has emphasized that records hold little significance to him. For the lightweight champion, retaining the belt remains his sole focus. He has no intention of relinquishing it to Tsarukyan. Should he emerge victorious, many argue Makhachev could be considered the greatest lightweight in MMA history—perhaps surpassing his mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Despite these accolades, Makhachev dismisses such discussions. During an interview with Daniel Cormier, he reiterated his focus on the present rather than his legacy.

Insight Into Parental Perspectives

Makhachev also shed light on his parents’ outlook on his career. According to him, neither of his parents are passionate about sports. His father, a humble farmer in Dagestan, remains deeply connected to his roots.

“This guy [his father] is a village man. He’s still working on his farm. He called me this morning to say the tomatoes are ripe,” Makhachev said. “He doesn’t really care about this [my fighting career]. He’s not into sports; he’s just a hardworking man.”

Mother’s Anxiety During Fights

While his parents support him, Makhachev revealed that his mother is too anxious to watch his fights. Though she shares the pride of their community and Dagestan, she avoids watching his matches—even after knowing the results. Instead, she prefers to take a walk in the village while the fight unfolds.

This habit reflects not a lack of interest but her immense emotional connection to her son’s career. “She walks through the area where we live. When I win, someone from another house will start yelling, and then she knows. She’s just too nervous,” Makhachev shared.
