Islam Makhachev: Khabib Happy but Misses Fighting
Islam Makhachev has revealed that Khabib Nurmagomedov remains deeply involved in the MMA world, even though he has officially retired. Nurmagomedov, who retired undefeated as the UFC lightweight champion, has passed the torch to Makhachev, who has successfully risen to become the champion in the 70 kg division.
The Unyielding Passion for MMA
Despite Nurmagomedov’s insistence that he will never fight again, Makhachev admits that the former champion still has a strong passion for the sport.
– I think he’s happy, but he misses fighting and training camps, said Makhachev on the “Pound 4 Pound” podcast with Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo. – That’s why he joins us everywhere. He loves to train – every day.
Makhachev further explained that Nurmagomedov remains constantly active, regardless of his location.
– He trains every day. He has houses both in the village and the city, both equipped with a sauna, a great gym, and a swimming pool. This guy trains every day.
A Formidable Training Partner
Makhachev mentioned that Nurmagomedov now weighs over 90 kg, making him an even more challenging training partner.
– It’s no secret that Khabib has the worst style for everyone, said Makhachev. – When he takes you down, he drains all your energy because he’s very heavy on top.

Makhachev compared his own skills to Nurmagomedov’s, emphasizing the latter’s exceptional control.
– I don’t have the same skills because I’m always looking for a choke or something when I’m on top. But this guy has crazy control; he holds you down. Now, he has even more power because he’s bigger, and he holds you tight, and you just say, ‘Please, let go.’
Makhachev (25-1 MMA, 14-1 UFC) is set to defend his lightweight title against Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 302 on June 1. Makhachev’s mentor, Nurmagomedov, submitted Poirier in the third round of their title fight at UFC 242.
