Ilia Topuria Throws Shade at Holloway’s Victory: “Nothing Special”

"Nothing special," Topuria on Holloway's win

Holloway Claims BMF Title

Max Holloway clinched the BMF title with a stunning knockout victory over Justin Gaethje at UFC 300. However, featherweight champion Ilia Topuria remained unimpressed by Holloway’s performance. Witnessing the fight from the sidelines, “El Matador” Topuria was visibly surprised as Holloway secured the win with just a second left on the clock.

Featherweight Focus

Although Holloway’s victory came in the lightweight division, he quickly refocused on the featherweight class during his post-fight interview. Speaking to Joe Rogan, Holloway expressed his desire to challenge Topuria for the featherweight title he once lost to Alexander Volkanovski.

Topuria’s Critique

In a post-victory interview with ESPN, Topuria critiqued Holloway’s performance, stating it was “good, but nothing special.” Topuria highlighted a lack of strategy in the bout’s closing moments, criticizing the fighters’ defense and warning that such mistakes wouldn’t happen under his watch.

A Challenge to Holloway

Having secured the featherweight title by knocking out Volkanovski in February, Topuria emphasized his achievement, pointing out that Holloway failed to accomplish this feat in their three encounters. Topuria also took to social media to congratulate Holloway, while simultaneously warning him of the unique challenge he would face should they meet in the octagon.

Ilia Topuria on ESPN: “Well, it was good, but nothing special to be honest.”

Ilia Topuria on X: “Congratulations on the performance, Max. I respect your story and everything you have accomplished with your beautiful family. Hopefully, we will share the octagon before the year is out, and believe me, you will feel something you have never felt before. I will be the first to knock you out.”
