Heated Interview Before UFC 308: “Opened a Retirement Home”
Tensions Rise Ahead of UFC 308
As UFC 308 on October 26 approaches, the heat between featherweight champion Ilia Topuria and challenger Max Holloway is intensifying. The pair will clash for the featherweight title, with Topuria defending his belt after his knockout victory over Alexander Volkanovski in the second round at UFC 298. Holloway, the former champion, earned his shot after defeating Justin Gaethje at UFC 300, securing the BMF (Baddest Motherf***er) belt. During an interview with ESPN MMA on Wednesday, the fighters exchanged barbs about the upcoming title bout, creating a tense atmosphere right from the start.
The tension escalated when Topuria appeared with a BMF belt behind him, despite the fact that the only title on the line is the featherweight belt.
“He hasn’t put the BMF belt in this fight. But after I beat him, I’ll feel like a BMF. It’s for myself, nothing special,” Topuria commented.
Back-and-Forth Banter
Holloway was quick to fire back, accusing Topuria of purchasing the BMF belt and stating that Topuria had been a fan of his for years. Surprisingly, Topuria agreed with Holloway’s statement, even though it was a subtle dig.
“I’ve followed your career for many years. You’ve been a great role model for the next generation, but now it’s my time,” Topuria said.
Holloway laughed and acknowledged that he was aware of Topuria’s admiration. He added that Topuria didn’t need to admit it because he already knew. The banter continued as Topuria reiterated his respect for Holloway’s career while making it clear that Holloway’s time was over, and it was now the era of the new generation. Holloway, however, disagreed, expressing his respect for Topuria’s rise but standing firm in his belief that his own journey was far from over.
“He’s earned his way. He’s beaten guys he was supposed to beat, and now we’re here. He gets the chance to face ‘Blessed Express’ on October 26, and we’ll see what happens,” Holloway said with a smile.

Max Holloway: Let the Hands Do the Talking
Holloway acknowledged Topuria’s confidence but seemed unfazed. He pointed out that while the verbal jabs are part of the game, they ultimately have to back it up in the Octagon.
“That [talk] is his motivation. Different people need different motivations. I’m excited. The fun part is we get to settle all the problems and all the talk. Until October 26, it’s just talk. When the cage doors close, let the best man win,” Holloway added.
Topuria, however, left no doubt that he believes victory is inevitable. Throughout the interview, he repeatedly emphasized that he represents the new generation of fighters and that Holloway’s time in the spotlight has passed. Before the interview concluded, Topuria delivered a final jab, not only directed at Holloway but also at former champion Volkanovski.
“I’ve already opened a retirement home. Volk [Volkanovski] already has his room. I’ve got another one waiting for you. After October 26, you’ll have a place there. Completely free, no charge,” Topuria said.
