Floyd Mayweather issues a challenge to Conor McGregor ahead of their fight
Floyd Mayweather wants to give Conor McGregor every possible advantage ahead of their fight on Aug. 26.
On Tuesday, Mayweather posted a message on his Instagram account telling McGregor that they should agree to use eight ounce gloves for their fight taking place at 154-pounds.
Typically fights at that weight require a bigger glove size, which is why Mayweather and McGregor had previously agreed to meet at 154 pounds while wearing 10-ounce gloves.
It appears Mayweather is willing to concede to the smaller glove size, which could help McGregor as he’s used to wearing only four-ounce gloves in mixed martial arts.
“Don’t believe what you hear in the media. Don’t believe what you hear on blog sites,” Mayweather wrote. “If it’s not coming directly from me, then it’s not true. I’m telling McGregor, “Let’s fight in 8 [ounce] gloves”. McGregor can fight in any brand he prefers or chooses. I’ll be wearing 8 [ounce] Grant gloves.
“Whatever advantage McGregor needs to feel more comfortable in the ring, I’m willing to accommodate. Let’s give the boxing and MMA fans what they want to see.”
Of course the fighters agreeing to the smaller glove size would still need to be approved by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, who are overseeing the contest on Aug. 26.
With just over three weeks to go until the card, Mayweather appears ready to offer McGregor a chance to drop down to an even smaller glove size while still weighing 154-pounds for the fight.
Mayweather issued his challenge to wear the smaller gloves but as of yet McGregor has not responded.
