Dustin Poirier looking for Conor McGregor rematch – gets response!
After losing to reigning lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242, Dustin Poirier found himself at a tough spot. He’d been training and fighting for what he felt was his moment to achieve his dream, but he was forced to tap to a rear naked choke in the third round. Now, out of the title picture, Poirier is looking for other options. Conor McGregor called for a shot at the title after UFC 242, but got Poirier’s attention instead. Poirier is interested in running it back with McGregor. However, Poirier received a vintage McGregor response.
I fed you to the canvas in 90 seconds bro.
You should have spoke my name with a bit more respect in that build up. “McGregor’s not next”
Motherfucker, it’s McGregor always!
McGregor is the goal! Always!
Say that now and I’ll think about it.#GoneIn90seconds #NicCage #AJolie— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) September 10, 2019

Poirier and McGregor met at UFC 178 in September 2014. That was McGregor’s fourth fight in the UFC, and at that point he seemed unstoppable. There was much attention focused on him, perhaps disproportionately so, as he seemed to be the next rising star. McGregor would end up backing up his words, as he promised a first round knockout of Poirier – which is exactly what happened.
As of now though, things have changed. McGregor has had numerous scandals outside of the cage, including assault and suspicion of sexual assault, amongst other things. He also hasn’t won a combat sports bout since 2016, whereas Poirier has won four out of his last five fights.
McGregor still has sway with the UFC, but Tony Ferguson will be offered the next title shot at lightweight. This opens up for a potential rematch between these exciting lightweights.
