Du Plessis Ready to Silence Doubters at UFC 312
Du Plessis Wants to Prove He Earned His Title
Dricus Du Plessis is determined to put an end to any doubts about his first victory over Sean Strickland as they meet again at UFC 312 on February 9, 2025, in Sydney, Australia. After capturing the middleweight title via a split decision at UFC 297, he now sees the rematch as an opportunity to prove he truly deserves the belt.
Addressing the Controversy
Their first fight sparked debate, with many—including UFC CEO Dana White—believing that Strickland had done enough to win. However, Du Plessis remains firm in his stance.
“For me, the split decision was the biggest shock to me,” Du Plessis said during the UFC 312 media day. “I didn’t think it was a split decision. I’m very happy this fight is happening because now I can put this to rest.”
He strongly disagrees with claims that he was fortunate to win the belt.
“I didn’t get lucky. I wasn’t gifted a belt. I fought for five rounds moving forward. Twenty-three minutes forward in a 25-minute fight warrants a win. That’s the guy who’s trying to fight, not the guy who’s trying to point.”

Strickland Seeks Redemption
Sean Strickland, who lost his belt to Du Plessis in January 2024, has been vocal about feeling robbed in their first encounter. He has promised a more aggressive approach in the rematch, aiming to leave no doubts this time.
Adding an extra layer of intrigue, former rival Alex Pereira—who knocked out Strickland at UFC 276—will be in his corner for UFC 312. Despite their past, Pereira has become an ally to Strickland and is eager to help him reclaim the title.
Du Plessis: “I’m Ready to Go to That Dark Place”
Although many fans had hoped to see Du Plessis defend his belt against Khamzat Chimaev, he is content with facing Strickland again. He sees Strickland as the toughest challenger available.
“I think Strickland is the best middleweight in the world right now, behind myself, and he deserves to be here,” Du Plessis said. “He’s incredibly good defensively. He’s tough, hard to hit, and when you do hit him, it doesn’t affect him like it does normal guys. This is the toughest fight of my life, and I’m ready for it.”
He also predicts a war inside the octagon and is prepared to take the fight to the limit.
“We’re going to go to that dark place from the start, and we’ll see who comes out. Even if this goes to a decision again, it will be an all-out war, and there will be no doubt that I’m the best in the world.”
What’s at Stake?
The UFC 312 main event will not only determine the rightful middleweight champion but also set the stage for future title fights. If Du Plessis wins again, a long-awaited showdown with Khamzat Chimaev could be next. However, if Strickland regains the belt, a potential trilogy fight may be on the horizon.
Regardless of the outcome, UFC 312 promises to be one of the most intense and personal title fights of the year.
