Daniel Cormier Warns Alex Pereira Ahead of UFC 307 Showdown

Could an Underdog Shock the UFC World Again in Salt Lake City?

During a recent episode of Funky and the Champ with Ben Askren, UFC veteran Daniel Cormier shared his thoughts on Alex Pereira’s upcoming title defense against Khalil Rountree Jr. at UFC 307. Cormier expressed concern that Pereira, who is the heavy favorite, might underestimate his eighth-ranked opponent, Rountree Jr., and fall victim to what he called a “trap game.”

Cormier referenced American football to explain this idea, describing a situation where the favored team overlooks their opponent and suffers an unexpected loss. He believes Pereira could face a similar fate if he’s not fully prepared, stating, “It seems like an eighth-ranked guy getting a title shot is a blueprint for an upset. They call these ‘trap games’ in football. This feels like a trap game for Alex Pereira, and if he ain’t ready, Khalil Rountree with his power can knock him out.”

The Odds Favor Pereira, But History Suggests Caution

Despite being the heavy favorite with odds of 1.22, Pereira needs to stay sharp. Rountree Jr., with his longer odds at 4.60, presents a high-risk, high-reward betting option. While many expect Pereira to dominate, Rountree’s striking power could turn the tide in an instant. Cormier isn’t the only one to hint at a potential upset, pointing out that Salt Lake City has been a breeding ground for surprises in recent UFC events. Fighters like Leon Edwards and Justin Gaethje, who were considered underdogs, delivered shocking knockouts in this same city.

No Stranger to Upsets in Utah

Salt Lake City has seen its fair share of shocking results, with memorable finishes like Leon Edwards’ last-minute knockout of Kamaru Usman and Justin Gaethje’s stoppage of Dustin Poirier. Cormier believes that the same unpredictable magic could benefit Rountree. Although Pereira has shown incredible striking and knockout power in his recent fights, particularly against Jamahal Hill and Ji?í Procházka, Rountree’s resilience and explosiveness mean he shouldn’t be overlooked.

With nothing to lose, Khalil Rountree Jr. steps into the octagon with the freedom to fight aggressively. UFC 307 is poised to offer another thrilling main event in Salt Lake City, where underdogs have stunned the MMA world before. Could history repeat itself?
