Cris Cyborg vs. Yana Kunitskaya In the Works to Headline UFC 222

A new headliner is nearly finalized for UFC 222 in Las Vegas on March 3

It appears UFC 222 will soon have a new main event.

Following an injury to featherweight champion Max Holloway that forced him out of the original headline fight against Frankie Edgar, a new matchup pitting women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg against newcomer Yana Kunitskaya is in the works for UFC 222 on March 3 in Las Vegas.

Sources close to the situation confirmed the news on Wednesday with verbal agreements in place for the new main event following an initial report by MMAFighting. UFC officials have not made any announcements yet regarding the matchup.

If the fight is finalized, Cyborg would be making her return to action less than three months after defending her title for the first time with a unanimous decision victory over Holly Holm at UFC 219.

As for Kunitskaya, she just recently joined the UFC roster after spending three fights in Invicta FC where she engaged in a pair of fights with former champion Tonya Evinger while picking up a win over Raquel Pa’aluhi in her most recent bout.

The co-main event on the card is expected to see Frankie Edgar face Brian Ortega in a title eliminator with the winner then likely moving onto face Holloway once he’s ready to return to action later this year.
