“Cowboy” Cerrone vs Justin Gaethje set as main event in Vancouver

✅ A clear-cut "Fight of the Year" candidate is set for UFC on ESPN+ 16 ✅ A combined 10 "Fight of the NIght" awards for these two lightweights

On the surface the recently announced bout between “Cowboy” and Justin Gaethje might be the best of the year so far.

UFC president Dana White could recently announce a fan-friendly match up set as the main event for UFC Vancouver on September 14th. The fight, announced for Yahoo! Sports, is none other than a lightweight match up between Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (32-12) and Justin “The Highlight” Gaethje (20-2). These two fan favourites have a combined ten “Fight of the Night” awards.

Cerrone has won “Fight of the Night” in his last three outings, in which he has returned to the lightweight division. After submitting Mike Perry in his last outing at welterweight he knocked out Alexander Hernandez in his return to lightweight. He then outpointed Al Iaquinta over the coarse of five rounds, winning a decision. In his most recent bout he took on the constantly high-ranked Tony Ferguson, and lost via TKO due to doctor stoppage between the second and third round.

Former WSoF champion Gaethje made his anticipated UFC debut against Michael Johnson, winning by second round TKO and also claiming two performance bonuses. He then lost two intense and bloody wars against Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier via TKO, still winning the “Fight of the Night” bonus in both. He then returned with a brutal KO over rival James Vick, and lined up a second straight KO win after finishing Edson Barboza.

The fight card for UFC Vancouver as it stands now is as follows:

  • Donald Cerrone vs. Justin Gaethje
  • Nikita Krylov vs. Glover Teixeira
  • David Branch vs. Andrew Sanchez
  • Todd Duffee vs. Jeff Hughes
  • Augusto Sakai vs. Marcin Tybura
  • Misha Cirkunov vs. Jim Crute
  • Antonio Carlos Junior vs. Uriah Hall
