Conor McGregor wants bout at Fight Island – UFC boss reveals when
UFC superstar Conor McGregor wants to compete at Fight Island, and he’s given a time period as to when he would return.
UFC 249 will, by all accounts, take place this weekend. It’s the celebrated return of the UFC, and once that event happens things will be in motion for more frequent events. As no major sports are ongoing, all eyes will be on the UFC, and it gives many fighters the opportunity to plan their comebacks. While there are many travel restrictions, UFC president Dana White claims to have secured a private island to host fights. While the island is rumoured to have a dark past, it gives fighters from all around the world a chance to compete.
According to White in an interview with Barstool Sports, Conor McGregor is looking to return in June for a bout at Fight Island.
“This is Conor right here…he’s asking me, ‘What date could I fight on Fight Island, and will there be fans?’ We’re not talking about a specific opponent, but he wants to fight,” White said.
“It sounds like he wants to fight in June and he’s asking if there would be fans there. There would not be fans, and the fight would either be mid-June or the end of June. But Conor wants to fight.”
Conor McGregor vs Jorge Masvidal?
While there is no confirmed opponent, there are several possibilities. A trilogy bout with Nate Diaz seems to have been looming ever since McGregor’s return to the UFC. Diaz fired shots at McGregor following his successful comeback at UFC 246, enticing him to a third bout. So far the score is 1-1 between the two rivals. While White has certainly been open to a rematch between McGregor and nemesis Khabib Nurmagomedov, despite the fact that the former hasn’t won a fight at lightweight for several years.
A strong contender is also BMF title holder Jorge Masvidal. He has been out to face McGregor for some time now, even seemingly dismissing a welterweight title shot in favour of a bout with the Irishman. White has also alluded to the possibility of Masvidal and McGregor fighting in the near future.
