Conor McGregor’s UFC Comeback Delayed: Coach Kavanagh Shares Insights

McGregor’s Return Set for Summer Instead of UFC 300, Kavanagh Addresses Training and Mental Health

Conor McGregor, the renowned former two-division UFC champion, is facing a delay in his highly anticipated return to the octagon, as confirmed by his longtime coach, John Kavanagh. Initially expected to headline UFC 300, McGregor now looks toward a possible comeback during International Fight Week in July.

In recent discussions, Kavanagh voiced concerns about McGregor’s prolonged absence from the UFC since July 2021. Despite hopes for an April return, the team now prepares for a summer timeline. Kavanagh, head of SBG Ireland, shed light on the situation during his conversation with Ariel Helwani, expressing both frustration and understanding of the delay.

McGregor, who recently re-entered the UFC’s drug-testing pool, fulfilling USADA requirements, has not competed since suffering a leg injury. Amidst speculations, Kavanagh clarified that McGregor’s physical health isn’t the concern, as he has fully recovered. Instead, the coach reflected on the impact of the delay on McGregor’s mental health, noting his fighter’s eagerness to return to competition.

Kavanagh also revealed McGregor’s current training regimen, including sessions with Brendan Loughnane, a high-profile name in the MMA world. This training partnership, formed due to their proximity and Kavanagh’s initiative, has been a positive development for McGregor, injecting new energy and motivation into his preparation.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the exact date of McGregor’s UFC return, Kavanagh remains optimistic, suggesting the possibility of two fights for McGregor in 2024 if circumstances align. He hinted at a potential matchup with Michael Chandler at 170 pounds, a fight eagerly anticipated by fans.

In conclusion, Kavanagh, known for his pragmatic approach, emphasized adapting to the situation and focusing on the present, underscoring the transitory nature of a fighter’s career and the importance of making the most of every opportunity.
