Conor McGregor praises Donald Trump – Gets ROASTED on Twitter!

"Just got off the McGregor bus, I was a huge fan until this tweet"

It seems many fans did not take kindly to Conor McGregor praising US resident Donald Trump on Twitter, as the backlash was swift.

UFC 246 was certainly a spectacular comeback for Conor McGregor, who dispatched Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in just 40 seconds! It was a near flawless performance for McGregor, who didn’t absorb a single strike. After the fight UFC president Dana White said that a lightweight title shot was next for McGregor.

The returning Irish superstar then took to Twitter the coming days after, partaking in jovial congratulation discussions from fans. Then, on Martin Luther King Day,  January 20th, McGregor commented on a post by US president Donald Trump. McGregor praised the Trump presidency, and wished the American population a happy Martin Luther King Day.

“Phenomenal President. Quite possibly the USA (goat). Most certainly one of them anyway, as he sits atop the shoulders of many amazing giants that came before him. No easy feet. Early stages of term also. Incredible. Congrats and Happy Martin Luther King Jr. day America,” McGregor wrote.

Trump is, however, a controversial and divisive president. While the political climate in the USA has been quite divisive for a long time, there seems to have been an increased divide between republicans and democrats as of the last few presidencies. Trump’s controversial and at times harsh statements have alienated many, in particular minorities.

This led to many on Twitter blasting McGregor for his praising of Trump.

These comments come shortly after the praise that McGregor received for his respectful demeanour shown in the lead up to UFC 246. Last year was not a good year for McGregor, who struggled with controversies outside of the cage. While some fans didn’t appreciate these recent comments, Trump fans certainly did. Regardless McGregor remains the biggest star in MMA, and has transcended  the sport like no one before him. That is worth a lot no matter what political affiliations one might have.
