Conor McGregor’s Continued Feud with Khabib Nurmagomedov Explained

"He'll never stop attacking Khabib"

The Root of the Feud: McGregor vs. Khabib

Former MMA champion Ben Askren believes that Conor McGregor‘s persistent attacks on Khabib Nurmagomedov stem from jealousy. This rivalry dates back to their infamous bout at UFC 229 in October 2018, which became the most successful event in UFC history. The tension leading up to the event was intense, culminating in a massive brawl after Khabib defeated McGregor and leaped over the cage to confront McGregor’s teammates.

The animosity between McGregor and Khabib remains palpable, especially from McGregor’s side. McGregor has repeatedly accused Khabib of avoiding tough fights, particularly after Khabib’s retirement in October 2020. The Irishman seizes every opportunity to insult Khabib, even mocking him over alleged tax issues in Russia.

McGregor’s Ongoing Attacks

Reports have suggested that Khabib owes millions to the Russian tax authorities, a situation McGregor relished.

“It’s typical rat behavior,” McGregor said during a Duelbits livestream. “A rat running away. He should fight for his legacy, with two main events or whatever he has in the UFC, and he’s owing the Russian government a ton of money.”

“So he’s going to pay his f***ing money that he owes, instead of shuffling it away to other countries. I’m delighted and happy that it’s gone this way for him, and we’ll all welcome him back to the fight game that he fled from.”

Askren’s Perspective on McGregor’s Jealousy

In a podcast episode of “Funky and the Champ,” former ONE Championship titleholder Ben Askren and ex-UFC champion Daniel Cormier discussed McGregor’s comments. Askren was unsurprised by McGregor’s relentless targeting of Khabib, attributing it to deep-seated envy.

“Khabib is everything Conor wishes he could be,” Askren stated. “He’s never going to stop, never. He’ll be 80 years old, attacking Khabib out of jealousy. He has all the money in the world. Deep down, he wanted to be the most respected martial arts champion on the planet.”

“No amount of money can make up for that. That’s what Khabib is. Khabib is a martial arts champion who everyone deeply respects because of how he lived his life. Conor wishes he had that same respect, but he’s too busy with prostitutes and cocaine to control himself. So of course, he’s jealous of Khabib.”

McGregor’s Upcoming Return

While Khabib remains retired, McGregor is set to make a comeback after nearly three years away from the sport. He is scheduled to face Michael Chandler in a welterweight bout at UFC 303 on June 29 in Las Vegas.

UFC 303 Fight Card

  • Main Event: Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler
  • Co-Main Event: Amanda Nunes vs. Julianna Peña
  • Welterweight Bout: Jorge Masvidal vs. Gilbert Burns

McGregor’s return to the octagon is eagerly anticipated, and the ongoing feud with Khabib only adds another layer of intrigue to his already storied career.
