CM Punk’s UFC Reflections: “The Hardest Fortnight of My Life”

"No Regrets: Punk's UFC Journey and Reflections"

Unexpected Turn

When UFC announced in 2016 that former WWE star CM Punk was to make his MMA debut at UFC 203, the news took many by surprise. Punk faced American fighter Mickey Gall in a match that ended in a submission defeat for Punk in the first round. Two years later, the WWE standout squared off against Mike Jackson at UFC 225 in Chicago, Illinois, only to lose by unanimous decision—a verdict later nullified because Jackson tested positive for marijuana. Following the loss at UFC 225, CM Punk decided to end his brief stint in MMA.

No Regrets

In a recent interview with MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, the 45-year-old discussed his UFC career. On The MMA Hour, Punk shared, “I asked my wife the other day if I was 35 when I made my UFC debut? And she said, ‘Oh no, you were 36 or 37.’ What was I thinking? I’m glad I did it. I regret nothing. However, fighting in Chicago was a mistake because those were unequivocally the worst two weeks of my life. I struggled with making weight, but I managed it.”

Pride in Perseverance

Despite the setbacks, Punk expressed pride in his efforts, “I’m proud of myself for that. But, yes, I am an ambitious guy. And I get it, it’s easy to mock me. Some people thought I was embarrassing. I made the weight, I managed to go out there, I’m 100% proud of myself, and I’d do it again. If you want to call me a loser, that’s okay. But I was happy for the opportunity, and I’m glad I did it.”
