Askren made his UFC debut against former champ Robbie Lawler, winning via controversial, first round submission. Askren locked up a bulldog choke and referee Herb Dean stopped the bout as Lawler appeared to go limp, but that was not the case. After that controversial finish Askren was brutally knocked out by Jorge Masvidal after only five seconds.
Maia recently endured a tough three fight skid against divisional elite Tyron Woodley, Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington. Maia then returned to the win column after submitting Lyman Good in Brazil. In his most recent outing he outlasted Anthony Rocco Martin, winning a majority decision.
