Adesanya Condemns UFC: “Francis Ngannou’s Legacy Cannot Be Erased”

Adesanya defends Ngannou’s legacy amidst UFC’s controversial edits.

Israel Adesanya has expressed his frustration with the UFC for seemingly trying to erase Francis Ngannou’s contributions to the sport. Ahead of UFC 305, a promotional video was released featuring Adesanya discussing the three African champions—himself, Kamaru Usman, and Ngannou. However, in the edited version, Ngannou’s name was conspicuously absent, a decision that didn’t sit well with Adesanya.

“Francis’ legacy in the UFC is undeniable and forever part of our history. Trying to erase it is ridiculous,” Adesanya said during a UFC 305 media event.

Despite Ngannou’s departure to the PFL, Adesanya emphasized that UFC cannot simply ignore his accomplishments. He acknowledged the competitive tension between UFC and PFL but stressed that it shouldn’t lead to rewriting history.

The split between Ngannou and UFC had been brewing for some time. Ngannou, also known as “The Predator,” openly discussed issues with his contract, which extended beyond financial matters. His desire for freedom to pursue boxing opportunities was a significant factor in his decision to leave the UFC and join PFL, where he secured the opportunity to fight in two high-profile boxing matches against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

Adesanya remains close to Ngannou and is eager to see him return to the ring, especially after the personal tragedy of losing his 15-month-old son earlier this year.

Adesanya expressed his admiration for Ngannou, stating, “I respect Francis so much. I’m glad for what he’s doing, especially after going through something so unimaginable.”

Adesanya believes the UFC will eventually recognize Ngannou’s place in the promotion’s history and correct this oversight.
