UFC Wants Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson 2 at UFC 232 in December
The UFC hopes to book a long awaited rematch between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232 on Dec. 29 in Las Vegas.
UFC president Dana White confirmed plans to ESPN on Wednesday and while the fight is far from official, he said that is the matchup he hopes to make for the year end card in December.
“It’s one of the greatest light heavyweight title fights in history and I expect the rematch to be the same!!!!,” White said in a text message.
Jones is currently on suspension until Oct. 28 as a result of a positive drug test from last July. An independent arbitrator ruled last week that Jones should receive a 15-month penalty for his second infraction of the UFC’s anti-doping policy while adding that he didn’t believe the former light heavyweight champion intentionally cheated.
Jones has said he would welcome a rematch with Gustafsson, who he first faced in a brutal five round back and forth war in 2013.
As for Gustafsson, he actually called for the rematch with Jones a day after his suspension from USADA was announced as he anxiously awaited the chance to avenge his prior loss.
As of now, Jones vs. Gustafsson 2 is not official and by all accounts neither of the fighters has even been offered the fight but it’s clear the UFC wants it to happen.
UFC 232 is currently headlined by a champion vs. champion fight between Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes but adding Jones vs. Gustafsson 2 would undoubtedly turn that into one of the biggest cards of 2018.
