Michael Chiesa Fails to Make Weight, Says He’s Finished as a Lightweight After UFC 226

Michael Chiesa says he's done fighting at lightweight after coming in over weight for his fight against Anthony Pettis at UFC 226

Michael Chiesa is done at lightweight.

The former “Ultimate Fighter” winner failed to make weight on Friday ahead of his showdown with former champion Anthony Pettis at UFC 226 before then saying that his days competing at lightweight are finished.

Chiesa came in at 157.5 pounds for the lightweight contest.

“This will be my last fight at 155,” Chiesa said after coming into the fight one and a half pounds overweight.

Chiesa is definitely a bigger fighter for the lightweight division but this was the first time in his UFC career where he failed to make weight.

In recent months, Chiesa has been working out of the UFC Performance Institute, which staffs an in house nutritionist as well as feeding the fighters who train there.

Obviously it appears Chiesa was going to struggle stepping onto the scale regardless of the advice of any nutritionist, which is why it appears his days competing at 155 pounds are over.

Chiesa will not attempt to weigh-in again on Friday while his opponent still has to step onto the scales on Friday. No penalty has been announced for Chiesa as Pettis still has to make weight and then accept the fight at a catch weight.

It’s likely the fight will move forward but Pettis has to officially accept the bout before that can happen.
