Daniel Cormier vs. Derrick Lewis Official, Sijara Eubanks Misses Weight Ahead of UFC 230
The UFC 230 main event is official after both heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and challenger Derrick Lewis made weight on Friday in New York.
Cormier tipped the scales at 251.2 pounds — up nearly nine pounds from his title fight win in July — as he looks to defend his heavyweight strap for the first time.
Meanwhile, Lewis came in at 264.6 pounds as he looks to wrestle the title away from Cormier just a few weeks after his last knockout win over Alexander Volkov at UFC 229.
Former middleweight champion Chris Weidman was on point at 186 pounds for his co-main event fight against Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza, who came in at 185.4 pounds.
There were two fighters who failed to make weight — including flyweight contender Sijara Eubanks, who was originally expected to fight for the 125-pound title on this card.
Eubanks, who has notoriously struggled to make weight consistently during her UFC career, came in at 127.2 pounds — 1.2 pounds over the flyweight limit for a non-title fight. Her fight against Roxanne Modafferi will still move forward as scheduled with Eubanks being fined for failing to make weight.
Eubanks may have also doomed her chances to fight for the flyweight title even if she defeats Modafferi on Saturday night. Eubanks was pulled from her previous title shot at ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ finale last year when she was suffering through a brutal weight cut.
Now she has failed to make weight in two out of her three bouts in the UFC, all but guaranteeing the UFC skipping over her when the next flyweight contender is determined.
Brian Kelleher also failed to make weight as he came in at 137 pounds — one pound over the bantamweight limit in a non-title fight — but his fight against Montel Jackson will also move forward as scheduled.
