Robert Whittaker Targets Summer Return – Calls Out Former Champion

A high-stakes middleweight clash that could reshape the division.

After a tough loss to Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 308, former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker is eager to make his return in June 2025. The Australian fighter has now set his sights on a long-anticipated matchup against former titleholder Sean Strickland, a fight that could shake up the division rankings.

Whittaker’s Road to Recovery and Next Opponent

Whittaker suffered a first-round submission loss to Chimaev in October 2024, with the Russian-born fighter securing a face-crank that forced Whittaker to tap. The loss not only halted Whittaker’s momentum but also resulted in a dislocated jaw, an injury that required significant recovery time.

Despite this setback, Whittaker has been actively training and refining his skill set, with the goal of returning at full strength. In a recent interview on On Paper with Anthony Smith, he made it clear that Strickland is the opponent he wants next:

“I think Strickland makes a good argument to have because I feel like we’ve both been in that top sort of pond for a while, circling each other. For whatever reason, we haven’t been matched up before, but we’ve been near each other for a while, and that’s probably the fight to make.”

Whittaker went on to express his excitement about the stylistic matchup, stating:

“I’m excited about that fight. I look at his style, and I think it’s interesting. I think it’s exciting to try to figure out. He’s a tough guy. But yeah, I’m really proud of my skill set, and I have a lot of confidence in it. I know I’ve had bad days, but you get through them. I’m still putting the pieces together sometimes.”

Strickland’s Recent Struggles in the Octagon

Sean Strickland, known for his relentless forward pressure and unfiltered personality, has faced difficulties since winning the middleweight belt. After a dominant victory over Israel Adesanya, Strickland lost the title to Dricus du Plessis in early 2024. He was granted an immediate rematch but was decisively beaten again, losing via unanimous decision.

However, in between these losses, Strickland secured a win over Paulo Costa, demonstrating that he remains a top contender. His style—centered around high-volume boxing and an iron chin—has made him a difficult challenge for many in the division. A fight against Whittaker would be a clash between two of the most well-rounded strikers in the middleweight division.

How Would Whittaker vs. Strickland Play Out?

A matchup between Whittaker and Strickland offers an intriguing contrast of styles. Whittaker is known for his explosive footwork, sharp counter-striking, and ability to mix in takedowns. In contrast, Strickland relies on constant forward pressure, an awkward but effective defensive shell, and a high-output boxing style.

Analysts believe Whittaker’s ability to create angles and move in and out could cause problems for Strickland’s more linear attack. However, Strickland’s durability and cardio could make it a grueling five-round battle.

According to UFC commentator Michael Bisping, this fight could come down to strategy:

“Whittaker has the tools to beat Strickland, but he can’t afford to get stuck in a slow-paced boxing match. If he keeps moving, mixes in leg kicks, and avoids standing right in front of Strickland, he has a great shot.”

What’s at Stake in This Fight?

Both fighters are in a position where a win could catapult them back into title contention. Whittaker, currently ranked #5, needs a statement victory to secure another shot at UFC gold. Meanwhile, Strickland, now ranked #2 after his loss to du Plessis, is also looking to stay relevant in the title picture.

With middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis expected to defend his belt later this year—possibly against Khamzat Chimaev—this fight could determine the next in line for a shot at the title.

“I just want to come back this summer. I’ve been working on new skills, but June feels like the right time. It gives me enough time to get everything together and enter camp properly,” Whittaker stated.

With both fighters eager to re-establish themselves, a Whittaker vs. Strickland showdown would not only be a must-watch fight but could also have major implications for the middleweight division.
